Constitution review, electricity tariff, electoral reforms top agenda as senators resume Tuesday

- By Saawua Terzungwe

The Senate has said it would take seriously, the issues of constitution amendment, electoral reform and electricity tariff hike when it resumes plenary on Tuesday.

The Red Chamber also hinted that it would do something fast to nip in the bud, the prevailing fuel scarcity leading to long queues in Abuja if the situation persisted.

The senator representing Ekiti South and Senate spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu, disclosed these on Saturday in an interview with newsmen at the end of the 2024 retreat of the Senate Press Corps held in Keffi, Nasarawa State, with the theme, “Democracy and development: How far, so far for Nigeria?”

He said the senators would deliberate on pending bills and motions and act on the report of the Senate Committee on Power regarding the electricity tariff hike.

He said, “The committee on power has already started working on that issue, and by the time we resume, we will get a report from them; and there are several others like that.

“We will take the issue of constitution review seriously immediately we resume, as well as that of electoral reform. Already, a committee has been constituted for those very germane constitutional issues. We are going to make sure we get what Nigerians want.

“Also, if fuel scarcity persists by the time we resume, we will make sure that it is taken care of.”

Meanwhile, the deputy president of the Senate and chairman Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has called for robust collaboration among all stakeholders to drive the ongoing constitution amendment process to a successful conclusion.

Senator Barau stated this on Saturday at the joint retreat of the secretariat and consultants to the Senate and House of Representatives committees on the review of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, in Abuja.

“The world is dynamic and this compels all serious countries to go with modernity and fashion their laws in accordance with contemporary happenings within their peculiarities,” he stated.
