Nigeria retains Africa Canoeing title, wins 3 gold, 1 bronze

The Nigeria Rowing, Sailing and Canoe team at the ongoing 4th Africa Canoe Slalom Sprint championsh­ip in Nairobi, Kenya, has continued their winning streak, with an additional two gold medals.

Bunmi Oluode, the Secretary, Nigeria Rowing, Sailing and Canoe Federation (NRSCF), in a telephone interview from Nairobi, disclosed this yesterday.

Oluode said that team’s latest gold victory was won by Jonathan Akinyemi in the men’s event of the white water slalom, while Lillian Japhet won gold in the women’s event.

The secretary had earlier said that Akinyemi, the African defending champion, on Tuesday retained his title in the K-1 canoe slalom men’s event.

She added that Japhet had also won bronze in the female canoe slalom event at the championsh­ip.

According, to her, the country had so far won three gold and a bronze medal in the championsh­ips, scheduled to end on Oct. 26.

“The athletes have performed to our delight in Kenya. We now have three gold medals and a bronze in the competitio­n.
