Polytechnics’ facilities overstretched - Rector

- From Abdullateef Aliyu, Ilorin

Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Alhaji Mas’ud Elelu, said yesterday that facilities of most polytechnics in Nigeria are being overstretched owing to students’ population explosion.

He said there was pressure from various quarters to admit all admission seekers, whereas facilities in the polytechnics cannot accommodate all of them. Elelu stated this during a briefing heralding the accreditation and verification of 15 courses of the institution by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

Ten programmes of the institution which cut across various departments and units are slated for verification while five are to be accredited.

He said students’ population of Kwara State Polytechnic has increased tremendously with its concomitant effects on the facilities, yet there is a pressure to accommodate the huge admission seekers in order to avoid “running into social problem”.

He noted the government cannot adequately meet the financial needs of the polytechnic, owing to other competing sectors.
