Attacks on senators height of impunity, says Rep

- By Musa Abdullahi Krishi & Ibrahim Kabiru Sule

Chairman of the House of Representatives committee on petroleum (downstream), Dakuku Peterside has said that Sunday’s separate attacks on two Senators was the height of impunity that should not be tolerated.

He said the attacks on Senator Magnus Abe in Rivers and Ali Ndume in Borno “are signposts that there’s danger in the days ahead and that Nigerians must rise up and fight for the sustenance of our hardearned democracy.”

Peterside, (APC Rivers) said the police commissioner in the state Joseph Mbu will eventually pay for the numerous atrocities he orchestrated against the Rivers people for the past months through various forms of impunity.

He said: “First, I have been consistent that all Nigerians must rise up and condemn what has happened in Rivers State, because it’s an abuse on our right to freedom of association, freedom of movement and our right to hold political views and opinions.

“Today it’s Rivers State; they will be strengthened if nothing is done. You may have noticed that before now, all of these were directed against Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi who holds a different view from those in the Presidency,” he said.

The lawmaker said Amaechi enemies have gone to different lengths to ensure that he was brought to his kneels, “but with the support of the Rivers people and God almighty, he has shown that he can speak truth to power; he has shown that we deepen democracy when we stand up for the people.”

Peterside who said he was not surprised that impunity and lawlessness has been taken to this height added that “they will certainly not get away with it.”

“PDP has shown that it is a party that cannot be trusted, that will continue with a culture of impunity. PDP has shown that it does not mean well for Nigerian people and it has frittered away our resources,” he said.
