Policeman shot while shielding legislators at Ogun APC rally
Armed people suspected to be hoodlums yesterday invaded a gathering of supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) loyal to former governor Olusegun Osoba at a rally in Wasimi, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, shooting the police orderly attached to the Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Gbenga Obadara, Sergeant Sunday Akinbode as he shielded his boss and others.
Another senator, Akin Odunsi who represents Ogun West and members of the House of Representatives including Olumide Osoba (Obafemi/Owode), Adekunle Adeyemi (Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency) and Remi Bakare, a former governorship candidate in the state also narrowly escaped the firing line.
This came barely a week after a similar attack at an APC party secretariat in Abeokuta. The attackers who wielded guns and other dangerous weapons had at about 1:38pm stormed the Wasimi venue of a political meeting convened by Senator Obadara to sensitize the people of the area about the forthcoming membership registration of the APC.
The police orderly and others shot were rushed to the Mercy Group Clinics, Panseke, Abeokuta and other nearby health centres in Wasimi for medical attention.
A member of the House of Representatives who was caught up in the attack accused the police of complicity. Senator Adegbenga Kaka who was at the hospital to visit the victims called on the federal government and the police high command to investigate the attack. Some journalists present at the venue also escaped unhurt.
