Car dealer arrested with N80m heroin

A car dealer has been arrested by National Drug Law Enforcemen­t Agency ( NDLEA) with N80 million worth of heroin.

The suspect identified as Ohagwu Earnest Ifeanyi was arrested by NDLEA detectives at the Murtala Mohammed Internatio­nal Airport (MMIA) while attempting to board a Qatar airline flight to China, it was gathered.

NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mitchell Ofoyeju, in a statement said the suspect had ingested about 735 grams of heroin when he was arrested. He said the heroin which weighed about 10.005 kilograms was valued at over N80 million. The statement, which quoted the NDLEA commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr. Hamza Umar, as saying that the seizure is a good way to start the year, said that it recovered 9.270 kilograms of heroin which originally came into the country from Pakistan.

“This is a good start for us considerin­g the value of the drug. The heroin seizures comprised of 9.270kg imported from Pakistan and 735 grams ingested by Ohagwu Earnest Ifeanyi. The suspect was arrested following a positive test for drug ingestion. The 38-yearold suspect, Ohagwu Earnest Ifeanyi, who hails from Enugu State, said he smuggled drugs to recover from a financial loss of N2 million,” part of the statement read.

In his confession­al statement, the suspect was quoted to have said: “I sell auto parts at Onitsha where I live with my wife and two children. My involvemen­t in drugs was to enable me recover from the N2 million loss I incurred in my business. My friend in China was the one that introduced me into drug traffickin­g. They were to pay me the $ 2,500. They gave me the heroin to swallow in a hotel in Lagos but I was arrested at the airport.”
