- From Beatrice Onuchukwu, Awka

Anambra State government has disbursed N56.6 million to 506 youths from different parts of the state under the State Youth Empowerment Programme.

Governor Peter Obi presented cheques of N100,000 each to the beneficiaries at Neni at the weekend after a two-week character development/ vocational and skills acquisition programme.

Obi who recalled that over 5,000 youths had already benefitted from the programme since inception in 2010 said the scheme was part of comprehensive measures to tackle unemployment.

He assured that beneficiaries who distinguish themselves would receive more support from the state government and expressed satisfaction that some of the pioneer beneficiaries justified government’s investment in the programme.

The member representing Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia Federal Constituency, Uche Ekwunife, thanked the governor for giving the youths the lifeline to actualize their aspirations and enjoined beneficiaries to reciprocate his gesture through judicious and prudent management of the funds.

Chairman of the occasion and former chaplain of the State House, Abuja, Rev. Dr. William Okoye, noted that Governor Obi had positively revised the fortunes of Anambra State, saying the programme was aimed at developing a new crop of leaders with different mindset and orientation.
