3 remanded over kidnap of 82-year-old woman

An Akure Magistrate­s’ Court yesterday remanded three suspects in Olokuta prison over the alleged kidnap of an 82-year-old woman. The accused persons are; Omonojo Sunday, 30, Ogunbayo Dapo, 31 and Tunde Adu, 34.

The magistrate, Mrs Folashade Ajayi, ordered that the three accused persons be remanded, pending the receipt of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutio­n (DPP) in the Ministry of Justice.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Cpl. Adebayo Aderinde, told the court that the suspects conspired with two others, now at large, to kidnap Mrs Olamodesi Akindeju.

He said the suspects, who were armed with cut -to -size locally made double-barrel gun, demanded a ransom of N50 million from the family of the octogenari­an.

Aderinde said the suspects used a Toyota Carina II car to kidnap her and took her to Kajola palm plantation in Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state. He said they detained the victim for seven days against her wish. The prosecutor said the accused held the woman hostage until a ransom of N3.1million was paid to them by her family.

He said the accused committed the offence on Jan. 8 at about 9.00p.m at No.10, Surulere Street, Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.

The prosecutor added that the offence was contrary to and punishable under sections 5(1) and 2(1) (a) (b) of Anti- Kidnapping and Anti-Abduction Law of Ondo State, 2010.

The case was adjourned March 27. (NAN)
