Tipper kills 2 near Masaka as residents set driver ablaze

- By Cornelius Iliya

A tipper fully loaded with sand, at the weekend, knocked down two people on a motorcycle in Luvu village, near Masaka in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The two victims died on the spot, City News has gathered from a witness.

The witness said the tipper was heading to Masaka while the two boys were coming from the opposite direction, adding that the driver of the truck lost control of the wheels and crushed the victims to dead.

He said the driver of the tipper escaped after the accident, adding, “we looked for him and couldn’t fine him as he ran away instead of staying behind to assist the victims or show some remorse.”

Another eyewitness, who craved anonymity, claimed the tipper driver returned to the accident scene, secretly in the night, to take the tipper away but he was noticed and alarm was raised which attracted the attention of some residents.

The eyewitness alleged that some people, consequently, beat the truck driver and set him and his truck ablaze.

A resident of the community accused truck drivers of driving recklessly in the area, saying that such accident as a result of reckless driving, was not the first in the area.

“They have been killing our people here to the extent that we had once blocked the road but the village head pleaded and now the same thing keeps happening,’’ the resident said.

City News learned that the village head of Masaka, Chief Chetubo D. Bisalla, reported the incident at Masaka Divisional Police Station and policemen from the station went there to remove the corpses from the scene.

The Public Relations Officer of the Nasarawa State Police Command, Idirisu Kennedy, confirmed the incident, adding that police were still investigating the matter.

He appealed to the people in the area to continue to live in peace, report any incident to the police and stop taking law into their own hands.
