‘ TCN has 165 ongoing projects to boost power’
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said it has 165 ongoing initiatives and projects aimed at increasing power supply to the nation from a modest 5,000mw to 10,000 mw in no distant future.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday at the TCN headquarters, the Chairman of the newly reconstituted Supervisory Board of the TCN, Alhaji Ibrahim Dahiru Waziri said his board would steer the affairs of the company towards achieving three broad objectives comprising zero stranded power, zero systems collapse and ensuring transparent and efficiently market operations.
The Board said it has taken a definite step by reviewing the 18 Milestone Deliverables of MHI which it described as robust performance targets for TCN, noting that the targets must be attained this year.
Waziri said: “Among other capacity building requirements, the Board has reviewed the Milestones Deliverables of Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) and we have been engaged in setting robust performance targets for management to attain in 2014 as well as assessing what value has been imparted and locally domiciled for sustainable performance of the company.”
On the recent performance of TCN Waziri said, “We have over 165 ongoing initiatives and projects aimed at doubling our power wheeling capacity from a modest 5,000mw to 10,000 mw, of which we are confident of 7,000mw on a balanced delivery as of now.”
He maintained that the government was repositioning the TCN to meet international standard.
“The Board has asked management to review and prioritise the raft of ongoing projects to ensure a more prudent focus of limited resources to key projects with immediate tangible impact,” added.
Fielding questions on funding, the TCN Director of Finance and Accounts, Mr Sonny Iroche, said that the 2014 budget allocation for TCN is N24.9 billion, hoping that the money would be accessed early by the TCN.
