Boko Haram in another deadly Borno attack
Shekau claims Albani killing in new video
Following Tuesday night’s terrorist attack on Bama in Borno State, Governor Kashim Shettima again visited President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday.
The governor and the president had a closed-door meeting that lasted for about two hours.
Rising from the meeting, Shettima told journalists that he was mainly at the Presidential Villa to update Jonathan on the attack on Bama.
The governor said though the number of the casualties could not be ascertained at the moment, he was aware that the insurgents unleashed havoc on the area.
On Monday after a meeting with the President, Shettima said the insurgents were better armed and better motivated than the Nigerian troops.
But the governor reaffirmed yesterday that the armed forces were doing their best to contain the activities of the Boko Haram sect.
He said, “Do I need your consent to come and see my president? He is the president of Nigeria and I need to update him adequately on the goings-on in the state. I came on my own. He is the president of Nigeria for God’s sake. Why can’t I come and update him? Is it wrong or is it a crime to do so.
“There was an attack on Bama. We are yet to get the actual number of casualties, but I am told they have inflicted a lot of damage on the town. Otherwise, the military are doing their best”, Shettima said.
The governor, however, declined comment on the Presidency’s reaction on its earlier comments that Boko Haram members were better armed and motivated than the troops.
“I don’t want to comment on it. He is our president and I am here to update him on the goings-on in Bama and I don’t want to make additional comments”, Shettima said.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, had Tuesday said that by saying the insurgents were better armed than the troops, Shettima lacked the expertise to categorise or classify the effectiveness of any weapon.
