National Conference: Nominations close today

- By Francis Okeke

Submission of names of prospective delegates by various interest groups for the National Conference being convened by the Federal Government will close today.

The Federal Government on January 30 announced modalities and composition for the conference, which will have 492 delegates.

Daily Trust had earlier in the week reported that some state governments and other groups have been compiling their lists of delegates, even though most kept the names close to their chests.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), which vowed to boycott the conference, restated its position this week but said its 16 governors were free to make nominations.

Daily Trust learnt that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has nominated its President Abdulwahed Omar, deputy presidents Promise Adewusi, Kiri Mohammed and Joe Ajaero, national treasurer Ayuba Wabba, vice president Issa Aremu, acting general secretary Chris Uyot and its director of research Dr Peter Ozo-Eso.

Others that make up the 12 slots allotted the NLC are its head of administration Emma Ogbuaja, President of Nigeria Union of Teachers Michael Alogba, President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees Ibrahim Kaleel, and Lucy Offiong who is chairperson of NLC’s women commission. The Nigeria Employers Consultative Assembly (NECA) which was given two slots nominated its Director General Segun Oshinowo but Daily Trust was unable to get the name of its second delegate.

For its part, the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) nominated its president Mr. Nduka Ogbaibena and deputy president Kabiru A. Yusuf as delegates to the conference.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) nominated its president Bobboi Kaigama (Northeast), First Deputy President Comrade Sunday Salako (Southwest), Second Deputy President Comrade Austin Etafo (Southsouth) and Third Deputy President Comrade Bede Okpara (Southeast), Secretary General Musa Lawal and Woman Leader Oyinka Olasanoye. Also on the list is the Abuja chapter chairman of TUC Comrade Aliyu Musa.

Also to represent TUC will be its erstwhile president Peter Esele, who was chosen “because of his experience”, according to an official of the congress.
