Bribe-demanding cop faces trial
The Kano State Police Command has commenced the trial of a police Sergeant, who was arrested for demanding N5,000 bribe from the father of a five-yearold girl, who was reportedly raped by a neighbour.
Daily Trust gathered that the orderly room trial of the police Sergeant(name withheld) who is of Sabon Gari Police Division commenced at the state’s police headquarters in Bompai area of Kano State on Tuesday.
It was alleged that the Sergeant, after collecting N1,000 from Garba Ibrahim, whose daughter was defiled by his neighbour, requested for another N5,000 before prosecuting the case.
“After I paid the N1,000, I wrote a statement. But on my way out, the officer asked me to go and see one female officer. When I met her, she said I shouldn’t be distressed over the issue, that I should just cooperate with them. Then another officer said I should give them N5,000. When I asked him what the money would be used for, he said I will know the reason when they charge the accused to court. I told them that I did not have that amount of money, but that I will try to get it,” Ibrahim said.
A police source told our correspondents that the recorded telephone conversation where the police Sergeant demanded money from the girl’s father has been submitted as evidence.
“It will be difficult for him to escape sack or demotion because there is substantial evidence against him,” the source said.
Spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, ASP Magaji Musa Majia, confirmed the trial.
“As you know, the commissioner of police has taken over the case. The accused will not be spared if he is found wanting,” he said.
