We should call a spade by its real name. What Borno State Governor Shettima said about the insurgents being better armed than the soldiers deployed to contain them was the absolute truth. Indeed, individual Nigerian soldiers have gallantly fought the insurgents but have to retreat due to heavier power of the insurgents in Benesheikh, Konduga (twice) and recently in Kawuri. In fact, we have no doubt about the individual capability of the soldiers, but their morale is greatly thwarted by lack of modern arsenal. It is high time we faced the reality and stopped this lackadaisical attitude of denials by the Presidency to cover their failures to tackle the security challenges in the North-East. You don’t have to be in uniform to know the capability of any military. Some of the best defence analysts in the world are not trained soldiers. Visit Sandhaust.
Alhaji M. Umar, Damaturu, +2348026915659 The insurgents may not be better-armed; but surely they are more determined and probably better organized than our armed forces. UMARU Haruna Usman, +2348036418149 The Daily Trust Editorial on Niger Delta amnesty is timely. Is it? It is disheartening that the programme has not stopped. Big money was impotent. The problems still luxuriate. That’s because corruption is alive and kicking. Excise corruption so that we can see the problems clearly. And the exchequer will surely proffer peace prettily.
