Men of the FCT police command said they have arrested a suspected armed robbery kingpin with two toy guns while trying to snatch a Toyota Camry car at Abaji town.

A source at the command said policemen attached to Abaji division, while on patrol around the roundabout axis of the town, came across three hoodlums trying to snatch the Camry car.

The source said the policemen immediately moved towards them and in the ensuing struggle, the hoodlums attempted to escape but a 28- year-old man, who claimed to be a kingpin, was nabbed.

“The kingpin of the group was arrested and two toy guns were found on him. Upon interrogation, he confessed not only belonging to the gang but also heading the group,” the source said.

The source also stated that the suspected armed robber confessed during interrogations that they have been operating within that axis for a long time.

Reacting, FCT police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Hyelhira Altine Daniel, confirmed the arrest, saying that the owner of the car was accosted by the armed robbers, who pointed a gun at him and asked him to surrender his vehicle or be shot.

The police spokesperson said the owner calmly came down from the car and handed the keys to them but as soon as he came down, he saw a police van coming towards them.

“He raised an alarm and the police stopped to verify what was going on, the armed robbers on seeing the police took off without any attempt to drive the vehicle, they all ran inside the bush, but two armed robbers escaped while a man, who confessed to have been the leader of the group was arrested with toy guns and some charms on him,” she said.

FCT Police Public Relations officer said the other two criminals ran inside the bush with the car keys while efforts are on to arrest other members of the gang.

The Deputy Superintendent advised residents to have confidence in the police and complain to the police whenever they feel threatened.
