Hit-and-run motorist kills cyclist at Manderegi village

A commercial motorcycle rider was on Sunday night killed by a hit-andrun driver at Manderegi village, near Abaji town, along the AbujaLokoj­a highway.

A witness said the incident happened around 9:48 pm when the cyclist, who was coming from Abaji town on his way to Bukpe village, cleared for an unmarked truck coming on top speed from Gwagwalada axis but which overtook another vehicle dangerousl­y and then knocked him down.

He said the truck driver speed off after knocking the cyclist, who fell down hitting his head on a concrete water drainage, adding that it was some residents of the village, who rushed to the scene that conveyed the cyclist to the St. Peter Hospital in Abaji.

“The Okada man hit his head on the culvert as the truck knocked him down. Doctors later confirmed him dead at the hospital at Abaji,” he said.

Our reporter gathered that the dead cyclist, who hails from Bukpe village, in Kwali Area Council was on his way home to Bukpe, after closing for the day’s business in Abaji town.

When contacted, however, Abaji unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Moses Audu, said he was not aware of the incident, as it was not reported to the command.

When City News visited St. Peters Hospital yesterday morning, it was learnt from a nurse that the cyclist was brought to the hospital and later confirmed dead, saying his remains was handed over to relatives for burial.

In another incident, two persons were seriously injured an accident which occurred on Saturday evening at Kwali, along the AbujaLokoj­a highway.

Yangoji unit commander of the FRSC, Austine Chukwudi Okeke, who confirmed the accident yesterday, said it happened around 4:34 pm and involved a Toyota Sienna car and a Golf car.

He attributed the accident to over-speeding and loss of control, saying the two injured passengers were taken to Kwali General Hospital for attention.
