Gunmen attack market in Borno

- By Ibrahim Kabiru Sule

A driver was left in a critical condition when armed men, suspected to be members of Boko Haram insurgents yesterday laid siege on Kayimla market located near the city of Maiduguri in Borno state.

Eyewitness told BBC Hausa Radio that the attackers stormed the market at about 12:30pm and started indiscriminate shootings, at the time when the weekly market activities were at their peak.

“They entered Kayimla market at around 12:30 pm and then started firing. They burnt many cars, which leave our driver in a very critical condition.

“The market is a weekly one, it holds every Sunday, but after the attack, it has been deserted,” he said.

He said there was no exact figure of the number of causalities from the attack, since everyone had ran away.

But when asked whether there were security personnel around, he said “the location of the security officers was distant to the market, hence there was no any security around during the attack.”
