Over 2000 All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Kwara State at the weekend renounced membership of the party and announced their defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The defectors who were from Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state were received by Senator Gbemisola Saraki into the PDP.

The erstwhile APC members tore their APC membership cards as they were given PDP flags at the event attended by state executive members of the party.

The state PDP vice-chairman, central, Alhaji Mohammed Mustapha Salman, state women leader, Hajia Nimota Oba Sulyman, organizing secretary, Jimoh Mobolaji Jibril, deputy secretary, Abolaji Raji, treasurer, Ahmed Adebayo, former House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Ezekiel Benjamin among others were on ground to receive the defectors, while Senator Gbemisola was represented by Dr. Saad Omoiya.

Leader of the defectors, Ajadi Abdulfatah from Ajikobi ward where former governor Bukola Saraki who is the state APC leader hails from said they were tired of the APC and were aligning with the PDP.

“We are decamping to PDP from APC. We were in APC before and when we joined APC, we discovered there are a lot of discrepancies, injustice and there is no fair play. That is why we decided to join PDP on the prompting of our leader, Senator Gbemisola Saraki. Those of us defecting are spread across the 11 wards of Ilorin West Local Government”, he said.

Speaking with newsmen, the private secretary to Senator Gbemisola Saraki, Barrister Yusuf Umar lauded the courage of the defectors, saying it is an indication that PDP is the party to beat in the state.

“We are pleased with their decamping and that shows that PDP is growing in Kwara State, to God be the glory”, he said.

Vice-chairman (Central) of PDP expressed delight with the development, saying, “If it is just one person defecting from APC to PDP, it is a factor. And that shows that PDP is taking over government in 2015 by the grace of God”.

They pledged their support for the state executive led by Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo.
