PDP urges Ekiti people to disregard referendum on new LGS

- From Doyin Adebusuyi, Ado Ekiti

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State yesterday urged people of the state to disregard Saturday’s referendum for the ratification of the newly created 18 local governments in the state.

The PDP in a statement described the referendum as an exercise in futility.

A statement by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, yesterday said the action by the state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the state Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC) amount to contempt of court.

“The proposed referendum is an illegal act, as it does not follow the due process expected of such an exercise. The legal matter over the constitution of EKSIEC is still in court. Apart from the matter of the constitution of EKSIEC being at the Supreme Court, Ekiti PDP has also gone to court challenging the creation of the new Local Council Development Authorities (LCDAs) and that is still in court,” he said.

The party said any action taken by Fayemi, EKSIEC and the Ekiti State House of Assembly on the matter is null and void and called on the people of the state not to waste their time by going out on Saturday for any referendum describing it as “sheer waste of time and resources”.

“We are reiterating again that the PDP is committed to the growth and development of the state in all ramifications and as a law abiding party, will never support any illegality,” he said.
