The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has announced N5 million scholarships and sponsorship fund to boost research and education in the country’s Information Technology sector.

NCS President, Professor David Adewumi, disclosed this during a press conference in Lagos to update the media on the forthcoming 25th edition of the Society’s annual national conference, #NCSEnugu2014.

He said that the scholarship award was meant to encourage IT studies among students, affiliates, technologist and corporate bodies’ members of the society.

The NCS president said the Society’s fund will also be used to sponsor members to attend conferences or workshops and researches in IT fields. Adewumi explained that the fund would galvanise the processes for a robust Nigeria’s knowledge-based economy which is the focus of the Society’s 25th National Conference, #NCSEnugu2014.

He said: “NCS believes the fund will increase IT education and research achievements in the country and provide many who are presently excluded with the ability to seize IT education and research opportunities and fulfill their potentials.

Adewumi said: “From next year, we intend to raise more funds through advocacy groups. We expect government at different levels, corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the gesture, so we can be part of global IT expansions.”
