Adamawa council chairmen may defect to PDP

- From Kabiru R. Anwar, Yola

All local government council chairmen and development area administrators in Adamawa State may return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the impeachment of governor Murtala Nyako.

Daily Trust learnt that Acting Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri spent most of yesterday holding discussions with the 21 local government chairmen and 50 development area administrators.

Speaking to Daily Trust in Yola, the Chief Press Secretary to the Acting Governor, Solomon Kumangar, said the council chairmen were willing to defect from the All Progressives Congress to the PDP, adding that preparations were being made to receive them.

“The chairmen and administrators will be received at the PDP secretariat next week where they will publicly declare their loyalty to the party and the acting governor”, he said.

A local council chairman confirmed the development to our correspondent, saying the acting governor requested for their support and they could not reject it.

“He told us the need to work together as members of the same political party and we reasoned along. You know we cannot reject it because our fate lies in the hands of the governor and the House of Assembly”, he said. Publicity Secretary of the APC, Phineas Padio, dismissed it as a rumour, saying they had not got any official communication from any council chairman.

In a related development, the acting governor in a statement signed by Kumangar, scrapped the Special Projects and Programmes Unit (SPPU), directing the Head of Service to retrieve all property in custody of the unit. The statement indicated that the SPPU, an ad-hoc body, has been a subject of controversy as it was established in contravention of the law and civil service procedures.
