FG supports new election for youth council

- By Romoke W. Ahmad

The Federal Government has shown support to the congress planning committee of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) to conduct fresh congress in September for a new set of executives.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Student Matters, Com. Jude Imagwe gave this assurance during a meeting with members of the council’s congress planning committee in Abuja.

The congress to be held in Abuja, according to the committee chairman Uzor Ifeanyi will also be used to perform the foundation laying ceremony of the proposed youth village, as NYCN celebrates its 50 anniversaries in September.

Imagwe blamed those who paraded themselves as leaders of the council for the crisis, saying “they allowed politics to destroy the council; they sold the council and threw it away.”

Also, the permanent Secretary of the ministry of youth development emphasized that government will take the issue of age seriously as stipulated by the constitution, noting that it has been one of the root causes of the crisis.

He said: “We want to take issue of 35 years of age very serious this time around.”

A Federal High court in Abuja had on June 30 cancelled all congresses held by the various factional presidents of the council.

Meanwhile, a 12 member congress and election planning committee of the council was yesterday inaugurated in Abuja. This will lead to the election of a new executive of the council.

Administering the oat on the members, Bar. Nmandi Nweke, urged the members to strive to pursue and implement the aims and objectives of the council.
