Judiciary workers’ strike shut courts nationwide
The strike action by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) which began last Friday has paralyzed activities in courts nationwide.
The strike action was initially restricted to all states’ High Courts as the FCT High Court of Justice did not join in the action.
However, when Daily Trust visited the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal as well as the Headquarters of the Federal High Court yesterday, their gates were under lock and key.
Workers who had arrived yesterday morning for their official activities were turned back by officials of JUSUN who were on hand to enforce the strike.
From Lagos to Abia, Kaduna to Jos and Oyo to Kwara states, courts visited by our correspondents on Monday were shut.
Though, the Federal High Court in Abuja had embarked on its annual vacation since last Monday, but our correspondent, who visited the courts, observed that some lawyers were loitering around the gate while security men prevented people from entering the court premises.
The judges proceeded on vacation with the exception of two judges left to entertain civil matters while the recess lasts.
Vacation sitting was supposed to commence yesterday.
The judiciary workers are protesting against the non-compliance to a court by state governments which give financial autonomy to the judiciary.
The National President of the association, Marwan Adamu, last week said in Abuja that the strike was the union’s last option to press home its demands, vowing that until the demands were met, the industrial action would continue.
