Boko Haram attack: 3,000 Damboa residents take refuge in Biu

Over 3,000 people including women and children who were displaced by Boko Haram insurgents in Damboa town of Borno State are now taking refuge in Biu, Adamawa state.

Sources said Deputy Governor of Borno State, Zannah Umar Mustapha was the one receiving the displaced residents who are camped at Government Girls Secondary School, Biu.

“The deputy governor had also mobilized vehicles and security operatives to follow Damboa road and rescue many families that were trapped in bushes and hamlets,” Sheriff Mohammed, Informatio­n Officer of Damboa said.

Our correspond­ent learnt that some of the residents have also fled to Maiduguri.

The insurgents, who had been consistent­ly attacking Damboa since Thursday hoisted their flag in the town on Saturday to signify their complete capture of the area.

Daily Trust learnt that some of the fleeing residents that went to Fori and kwairi, two villages not far from Damboa were in the early hours of Sunday trailed and slaughtere­d by the insurgents.

A local government official in Damboa, who confirmed that their people are now in Biu said the Boko Haram assailants have destroyed what remained in the town.

“I am now speaking with you from Biu and the situation is pathetic. If not for the prompt interventi­on of the Borno State government, our people would have been in trouble,” he said.
