Couple arrested over N10m fraud

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

Detectives attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 48 year-old man and his wife for allegedly swindling some traders of about N10 million.

The suspects identified as Mr. Danladi Wushishi and Mrs Ojuolape Wushishi, were arrested at their Ikotun residence.

Danlandi, who claimed to be a Customs officer allegedly tricked his wife into collecting the said amount from some traders under the pretence of giving them Custom auction papers for second hand cloths.

In her confessional statement, the woman said: “My husband told me that auction papers for second hand cloths (Okrika) were available, so I spoke with one Chinyere who is into the business. At first, we took over her to Ikorodu Customs Terminal to see the cargo. We even paid N30,000 to the Custom men at Ikorodu terminal before they brought down one of the containers to show her. I did not know that the paper my husband was parading was fake, but when the container was opened, it contained both books and second hand cloths. After the inspection, we went to the bank for the transaction.

“While we were waiting for the 437 bales, I went to Orelope market to pay for a warehouse at N50,000 a month. I paid with my money. The first amount the complainant paid was N4,847,000 . One night at about 10 pm, my husband called to ask me to take the victims to the warehouse and that he was coming with the container. We stayed at the warehouse from 11 to11:30pm, after which I called him to ask why they were delaying and he said that the trailer developed fault. I never knew that I was being deceived. How can I doubt my husband of 17 years”.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, said the couple was arrested based on series of petitions to his office. He said they will soon be charged to court.
