Students want Chibok schoolgirls rescued quickly

- By Abubakar Yakubu

Students of Mater Misericordiae Secondary School, a Catholic school situated in Nyanya, Abuja, Saturday called for urgent action from the federal government in rescuing the over 200 hundred Chibok schoolgirls, who have been held captive at Sambisa Forests by Boko Haram for the past 98 days.

The students, who stated this during a talk show as part of activities to mark the school’s pioneer graduation ceremony of her junior secondary three classes, wondered why it took several weeks after the abduction before government could act on the situation.

They said with the vicious nature of the Boko Haram sect, the girls are being exposed to danger of rape and watching people slaughtered.

The students also appealed to the sect to release the girls, adding that the condition of the forest is not healthy for the students.

Some Parents and staff of the school, who listened to the students, shook their heads wearing sad looks on their faces.

Earlier in her speech, Principal of the school, Rev. Sister Ethelma Obiaju, said the school started on September 9, 2011 with only 32 students and eight teachers but can now boost of 113 students.

She said with well-equipped facilities such as library, basic technology workshop, cultural/ creative art studio, multi-purpose, home economic and computer laboratories, the school has secured government’s approval to write external examinations in the school.

The principal was optimistic that students of the school will excel in the just concluded Basic Education Certificate Examination and called for donation towards getting a school bus, completing the school’s building and putting in place well equipped physics and chemistry laboratories as the school metamorphoses into a senior secondary section.

Highlights of the event were choreography display, drama, dressing competition, cultural dances and cutting of graduation cake.
