Ethiopia nationalit­ies day unifying force –Envoy

The celebratio­n of Nations, Nationalit­ies and People’s Day in Ethiopia has been described as a unifying event for the country.

Minister Counsellor II in the Ethiopian embassy in Nigeria Alemu Ayele Gesuma, made the assertion in an interview with Daily Trust in Abuja.

He spoke against the backdrop of the 9th celebratio­n of the day on December 8 which coincided with the anniversar­y of the country’s new constituti­on that enable Ethiopians lived in harmony.

The envoy said the day was a symbol of peace, democracy, justice, tolerance, love and affection between and among peoples of the country.

According to him, the celebratio­n of the day took place at the Benishangu­lGumuz Regional state, the site of the 6,000 capacity electricit­y dam on the Blue Nile with about 4,000 attendees from across Ethiopia and neighbouri­ng countries that included presidents of Djibouti and Sudan.

Gesuma added that the day was also meant for demonstrat­ion of unity in diversity, expression of cultural, religious, linguistic and ethnic multiplici­ty.

He noted that it was a day when the constituti­on that was rightly described as belonging to all Ethiopians was adopted.

The Counsellor said with peace among the people, Ethiopia was able to achieve accelerate­d developmen­t which the World Bank and the Internatio­nal Monetary Fund (IMF) acknowledg­ed to be among the fastest in developing countries.

Gesuma said with the level of developmen­t in Ethiopia, the country would become a middle income country by 2025.
