Amodu urges Keshi to resign as Eagles’ coach

- By Mike Oboh

he Nigeria Football Federation Technical Director, Shuaibu Amodu has urged Super Eagles Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi to honourably resign his position as the team’s handler for the good of the game in the country.

Amodu, who stated this in a chat with sports reporters in Abuja, said whatever the working relationship Keshi has with the federation, it will be to the best interest of the nation if he throws in the towel so as to give the country the opportunity to reposition its football.

He said his position on the matter was based on the common theory that a coach is as good as his last game, hence his advise to Keshi to resign, having failed to qualify the country for the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Te former BCC Lions of Gboko sweat merchant, who said Keshi is a through bred professional, stressed that retaining him as Eagles handler will send a wrong signal because Samson Siasia was sacked after failing to qualify the country for the 2012 Nations Cup.

“I am of this opinion because as a coach you are as good as your last game, but only Keshi alone should decide what to do. But if he has a reputation, he should walk out of the job, but if he does not have, he should hang on to the job.

“The truth is that he has failed and to keep him is a bad precedence because when Siasia failed, instantly they told the whole country that he had failed and he left and President Jonathan could not save him. What is good for the goose should also be good for the gander. That is my personal opinion,” Amodu noted.

He added that for the nation to come out better from this poor result of the senior national team, the federation should give the National U-23 team, the Dream Team all the support to succeed because the next crop of national team players will come from there.

“Let me also advice that the best thing for us is to adequately support the Dream team 6 because that is where our next set of players will come from. I am not saying that we should throw away everybody in the Super Eagles but that is the way to go” Amodu concluded.
