Group seeks support for Buhari presidency

Woman, 85, killed in Taraba

The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Buhari Friends Organisati­on Incorporat­ed has solicited the support and cooperatio­n of the Akwa Ibom people whom he urged to come out and vote massively for the All Progressiv­es Congress (APC) presidenti­al candidate General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) in the forthcomin­g presidenti­al election slated for February 14.

The Grand Patron of the group and former military governor of Ogun and Rivers states Rtd Group Captain Sam Ewang, who spoke at the first inaugural meeting held at the weekend in Uyo, said the purpose of the meeting was to promote the political aspiration of Buhari to ensure that he gets the overwhelmi­ng percentage of votes to win the election.

Ewang, who contested the governorsh­ip primary poll of Akwa State under the platform of the All Progressiv­es Congress (APC) and lost to Umana Okon Umana, averred that Buhari would win convincing­ly in the Northeast, North-west and Southeast, adding that it would be too sad if he failed to win Akwa Ibo State.

He said: “I want every hand to be on deck to promote him (Buhari) in Akwa Ibom State. Let me inform you that Buhari is going to sweep the entire North-east, North-west and South-west and it will be too sad if he does not win in Akwa Ibom. That is why I am urging you to do everything to ensure that he wins in the state.’’

Earlier in his address the National Coordinato­r of the group Mr. Anthanasui­s Okon, reminded the people that the Buhari project required people of like minds, urging them to unite and cooperate with the candidate to win.

The state coordinato­r in his remark urged the people not to be discourage­d by the attendance of the meeting, saying they should come out en-mass to support and promote the retired General in the forthcomin­g election. Residents of New Era Area of Jalingo were yesterday thrown into confusion following the discovery of the lifeless body of an 85-year-old woman killed in her farm and her two eyes removed by unknown persons.

Daily Trust gathered that the aged woman (Mama Laraba) who was a mother of two, left for her farm located at Jenibambu area on Saturday morning to harvest millet but she never returned home.

Following the developmen­t, some residents joined the late woman’s daughters in search of her at the farm where they discovered her lifeless body dumped by her killers.

A relation said: “We noticed that all was not well when Mama did not return at the usual time that she used to come back from the farm. When fear engulfed our hearts, we mobilised and went to look for her (and) on getting to the farm, we recovered her dead body by the side of the farm, with her two eyes removed by unknown killers.”

Residents and relations described the killing of the woman as barbaric, calling on the police to fish out her killers.

When contacted, Taraba State Police Spokesman, ASP Joseph Kwaji confirmed the incident. He said the police command were currently investigat­ing the matter.
