No hiding place for ex-govs, ministers – Lamorde

- By Ronald Mutum

he chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Lamorde has said there would be no hiding place for corrupt ex-governors, ministers, National Assembly members and other government officials within and outside the country.

The EFCC chairman disclosed this yesterday at the headquarters of the Commission in Abuja, while briefing journalists alongside the Head of the United Kingdom (UK) Metropolitan Police Proceeds of Corruption Unit, Mr Jonathan Benton.

According to Lamorde: “In respects of some of the new cases we have embarked upon, we are investigating sitting state governors, some ministers that are serving, also ministers that have left office, some former Heads of Service of the Federation and members of the National Assembly, we will never mention names since it’s a joint investigation.”

He said: “the most important thing is that people should know a lot is going on, and any person whether man or woman, occupying public office who decides to put her hand or his hand in government coffers to steal, there is no hiding place, whether you take the money outside this country, there are machineries in place to trace this money and also bring such individuals to justice.”

Lamorde also commended the Metropolitan Police for helping to discourage a lot of people from stealing money from Nigeria and taking it to the United Kingdom. He urged Nigerians to

patient because proper

be investigations take time, noting that perpetrators of financial crimes had changed their method unlike when they were using their names, immediate family members, which could be easily traced or detected.

Lamorde, while lamenting the problems in the criminal justice system of the country, listed the trials of some former ex-governors delayed in various courts since 2006. He noted that some have been re-elected into prominent positions in government.
