NBA seeks end to judiciary workers strike

- From Yahaya Ibrahim, Maiduguri

The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in Borno State has called on relevant authorities to ensure speedy resolution of the judiciary workers strike which has crippled court activities for about two weeks.

Chairman of Maiduguri branch of the association, Abdulwasiu Alfa, made the call yesterday in Maiduguri while delivering his speech during the annual Law Week. He lamented that the strike had hindered administration of justice.

“It has succeeded in crippling a substantial aspect of our means of livelihood. It has, in fact, threatened our values and essence. Today, legal practice is narrowed to the state capital only. No one gets briefed outside Maiduguri. Legal practitioners are in a very precarious and vulnerable situation,” he said.

He said the annual Law Week provides a platform for members of the legal profession to acquire and improve their skills and knowledge in their field of practice for enhanced productivity.

The chairman added that the theme of the event revolves around the application of the Borno State High Court Civil Procedures Rules, 2012.

“The choice of the theme is apt. There is compelling need for the Bar and the Bench to clearly understand the spirit and letters as well as intent of the above orders in the rules. Only few of us understand the rules and even less, appreciate it. This is the only avenue for us to understand and appreciate it,” he added.

Governor Kashim Shettima, who declared the workshop open, said the NBA wass one of the most respected professional associations in Nigeria, because “they have consistently remained the voice of the voiceless.”

The governor, represented at the occasion by Kaka Shehu Lawan, the state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, said his government would continue to partner the association in the dispensation of justice.
