APC wants Osoba to name SDP presidential candidate

- From Kehinde Akinyemi, Abeokuta

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday challenged the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, to name the party’s presidential candidate.

The party also raised alarm over SDP’s vow to muster 500,000 votes in the forthcoming general elections, declaring that it is a ploy to rig for the PDP.

At a news conference, held at the auditorium of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abeokuta, the Ibikunle Amosun campaign organisation wondered the rationale behind the silence of the SDP in making public its presidential interest.

Chairman of the organisation, Chief Bode Mustapha, in his address, said the attention of the organisation has been drawn to the claim by Osoba during the SDP rally last week, that the purported 50,000 membership of the party would produce 500,000 votes, if one member could convince 10 voters to vote the SDP.

Mustapha, who was flanked by Barr. Bisi Adegbuyi, Dr. Gbolade Osinawo, Femi Sowolu and Jibola Amosun at the briefing, wondered at the claim by “the party that could not even garner marginal support from its campaign at Itoku market amongst other parts of the state capital.

“What kind of mysterious, magical stunt does Chief Osoba have under his hat that will automatically produce half a million votes out of nothing, or from clear blue skies, when the whole world already knows that neither he nor his party possesses the support to command a fraction of that amount of votes from any ward in any part of Ogun State,” he said.
