Elections: FCT NYSC wants corps members protected

- By Maureen Onochie

The Coordinator, Federal Capital Territory chapter of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), MrOlanipekunAlao, has said that all hands must be on deck to ensure that corps members all over the nation are protected from any form of violence during the forthcoming general elections.

Speaking with newsmen in his office over the weekend, he insisted that the federal government has a major role in sensitising Nigerians on the role corps members were to play during the elections, saying that “corps members are not politicians neither are they agents to politicians.”

He appealed that religious and traditional leaders to do all they could to protect the lives of corps members who, he said, left their parents and communities to serve the nation in various parts of the country.

Alao also expressed hope that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) would take up the responsibility of educating the citizens on the roles of corps members during elections.

On the NYSC, he said corps members would be sensitised on the right morals to uphold while discharging their duties, adding that the scheme has set up a security committee to come up with mechanisms to monitor the corps members.

Alao said that Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will train the corps members on how to discharge their electoral duties during the polls, adding that the corps members have commenced registration for the exercise.
