Buhari campaign office accuses NBC, APCON of promoting violence

- By Nuruddeen M. Abdallah & Latifat Opoola

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) are by default promoting violence and hate following their inability to sanction erring broadcast stations across the country, Buhari campaign office said.

The two regulatory agencies of broadcasting and print, the opposition campaign said have looked the other way while industry players and groups continuously breach extant laws and regulations governing activities of the agencies.

In a statement by the media and publicity director Malam Garba Shehu, the campaign refered to the assurances by the Director General of NBC to wield the big stick on erring broadcast stations that violate the code particularly when it comes to airing of political programs under this political dispensation.

The campaign challenged the NBC to make good its threat to wield the big stick against erring broadcast stations by applying its code to all industry players across board without fear or favour.

The APC campaign lamented that the situation is also the same with the APCON, the regulatory body saddled with the responsibility of screening print adverts for publication and issuing certificate of clearance.

Meanwhile, the Supervising Minister of Information Edem Duke has called on advertising practitioners to commit them-selves to socially responsible conduct in line with the need to safeguard the integrity of advertising communications and the well-being of those exposed to adverts.

In a statement by his press secretary, Joseph Mutah, the minister stated this in Lagos while inaugurating the 6th Governing Council of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON).
