Women’s interest better protected by Jonathan — Ijaw women

- By Ojoma Akor

The interest of Nigerian women can be better protected and enhanced by the candidature of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the Ijaw Women Connect (IWC) has said.

Briefing newsmen yesterday in Abuja after a communiqué was issued after the organisation’s maiden meeting, its national president Comrade Rosemary Graham Naingba said IWC believed that only the re-election of President Jonathan would sustain democracy in Nigeria.

She said Ijaw Women Connect threw its weight behind Jonathan by endorsing him for a second term not because he is an Ijaw man but due to his goodwill and administration’s transformation agenda that has brought significant changes to the country.

She added that their decision was also based on the fact that no president in Nigeria’s history has ever pushed the cause of womanhood like Jonathan as evident in his 35 percent affirmative action for women in government and women empowerment.

The Ijaw women said President Jonathan has provided result-oriented policies that led to the enactments of the Freedom of Information Act and Anti-Same Sex Marriage law in addition to providing a truly representative democracy.

They said some of Jonathan’s giant strides included the initiation of YouWin program, establishment of federal universities, introduction of almajiri system of education in northern states and revamping of the railway system, among others.

They called on well-meaning Nigerians, particularly women, to massively vote for Jonathan during the March 28 presidential election.
