2015-Election: Jega, Orubebe … the new buzz?
Opening the scene on this was an online report by Daily Trust titled, ‘The meaning of “Jega”’. Reports thronged in on Tuesday that a former Minister, Godsday Orubebe stormed the presidential elections result collation centre in Abuja accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) leadership of partiality while trying to disrupt nearly completed efforts.
Although onlookers said it was personal, the reaction of Attahiru Jega, the commission’s chairman was a sharp contrast to what was expected. Daily Trust reported that the handling of the situation was akin to defusing a time bomb—and earned him immense respect, and a listing of his name as a verb, a noun, adjective, and adverb.
It has so far generated some heat on the social media as Chiroma Hadi Khan Jallo posted this: “J_ Jega, E_ Ended; G_ Goodluck; A_ Administration.”
And Ahmad El-teejay Makeri in an attempt to explain the word ‘Jega’ posted: “Cool and calm when someone is harassing.”
“A great warrior in the history of Nigerian democracy,” a descriptive post from netizen Ibrahim Yahaya.
A netizen, @iam_Bonex tweeted that ‘ORUBEBE is now in Nigerian dictionary. Meaning: any attempt to disrupt a descent and peaceful gathering.’
And lastly, @verified_honour makes a sentence with both: ‘You do me Orubebe, I do you
