Woman named ‘World’s Ugliest’ 28 times dies aged 67

AWOMAN who has been voted the ‘world’s ugliest’ female 28 times has died aged 67.

Anne Woods made her first appearance in the competition in 1977 and returned almost every year for close to the next three decades.

She finished runner-up five times out of the 33 tournaments she attended and missed one because she was heavily pregnant.

The World Gurning Championships aim to show people at their worst. And the bizarre facepulling tournament has been dubbed the “world’s ugliest” competition.

The event, which is held in Egremont, Cumbria every year, has risen in popularity over the years.

Since its release in 1996, Anne chose Babybird’s ‘You’re Gorgeous’ as her signature during her four minute performances.

In 2010, it seemed the competitions were taking their toll as she suddenly collapsed outside the competition room after winning the event. But she was fit enough to carry on and prepared to retain her crown.

A year later, Anne was recognised in the Guinness Book of Records for her large number of wins in the competition.

Her death has shocked many among the competitions and in the town of Egremont.

Callum Scott, secretary and vicechairman of the championships, said: “Anne was very popular in the town and Crab Fair will not be the same this year.

“Anne couldn’t sit in the audience and watch the gurning as she was so popular. She was very passionate.

“We will be doing something in her name at this year’s event.”
