Rep Ahmad wins Kwara Assembly seat, to emerge Speaker

- From Abdullateef Aliyu, Ilorin

Chairman of the House of Representatives committee on justice Rep Ali Ahmad has won the House of Assembly seat for Ilorin South constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly.

Ahmad who currently represents Ilorin East/South federal constituency in the House of Representatives has been pencilled down to emerge as speaker of the state assembly, Daily Trust learnt.

With APC coasting to victory in the governorship election and winning all the 24 seats in the House of Assembly, the coast is clear for the emergence of the federal lawmaker who is a lawyer to emerge as the next speaker.

He would be succeeding another legal practitioner, Hon. Razaq Atunwa who has been elected to represent Ilorin West/Asa federal constituency in the House of Representatives.

Ahmad defeated his archrival and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Saturday’s election with 21, 110 votes to 11, 972.

Asked how he felt vacating the Reps seat to become a state lawmaker, Ahmad said that was the choice of the people, stressing that he would be ready to serve his people in any capacity they deemed necessary.

He said: “It is all about service. If you have gone to the National Assembly and your people have seen you perform creditably well and they said, ‘look, what you have done at the national level, we want it here at the state level even more.”
