Michael, Omang reach Tombim doubles quarter-finals

Team Nigeria’s Micheal Moses and Omang Thomas Otu have qualified for the doubles’ quarter-final of the ongoing Nigeria Tennis Federation/ Tombim Tennis Championsh­ip taking place in Abuja.

The duo saw off the duo of Republic of South Africa’s Chetty Joshua and Forchap David Chaplefeh of Germany 6-4, 7-5 in keenly contested match yesterday to book the quarter-final berths.

They will now battle the duo of Song Evan (USA) and South African Crowley Keith-Patrick for a spot in the semifinal later today. Song and Crowley had earlier edged out Nigerian duo of Mohammed Mohammed and Ubon Joseph Imeh 7-6, 6-3 in the first round.

Also, highly rated Clifford Enosoregbe will feature in the quarter final alongside his Zimbabwean partner, Tinotenda Chanakira after trashing the duo of Korshuhuno­v Stanislav of Russia and Croatian Merunka Stefan 6-2, 6-1 in the first round.

They will be contending with second seeded Jeevan Nedunchezh­iyan of India and his partner, Pecotic Matija of Croatia in the quarter final match in the afternoon.

Nigerian Atseye Henry who will be playing in the second round of the Singles category today is also through to the Doubles quarter final alongside his Indian partner; Kamal Kshitij after a highly contested first round encounter.

However, the duo of Nigerian Bikom Albert Bisong and Paul Christian were defeated 6-4, 3-6 [12-10] by the duo of Ghana’s Darko George and Ugandan Mugabe Duncan.

Also, British fourth seeded Cooper Joe and his non-seeded South African partner; Vorster Tucker edged their Nigerian opponents; Iloputa Ikechukwu and Micheal Okechukwu 6-3, 6-2 in a match decided yesterday.

Other singles first round matches decided yesterday saw Nigerian Paul Christian advancing to the second round after a 6-1, 6-3 win over Great Britain’s Cooper Joe.

However, first seeded Jeevan Nedunchezh­iyan of India trashed Nigerian Balami Umaru 6-1, 6-1 to set up a second round encounter with Paul today.

The Tombim Tennis Championsh­ip is an Internatio­nal Tennis Federation’s Pro Circuit event that award ranking points to winners.
