Ilorin unrest: Police, soldiers comb houses for suspects

ecurity operatives have commenced a househouse search for people who participat­ed in the attack on two operatives of Nigeria Drug Law Enforcemen­t Agency (NDLEA) in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Daily Trust learnt that a combined team of security agencies including the Police, Army, Air Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) are involved in the operation.

The homes of the NDLEA officials were invaded on Saturday by suspected drug addicts, who were reportedly avenging the raid of their hideout at Idi Ape the previous day.

Three people died in the fracas while residence of the NDLEA operatives and those of their neighbors were set ablaze. Property were also looted by the youths who shot sporadical­ly during the attack.

Though, 47 suspects had earlier been arrested, the search for suspects resumed on Tuesday evening. Our correspond­ent observed massive deployment of security operatives in parts of Ilorin metropolis. The operation, it was learnt, was a fall-out of the security council meeting convened by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed with heads of all security agencies in attendance.

Areas combed by the armed security men include Idi Ape, Okelele, Gambari, among others where some of the hoodlums are believed to be hiding.

It was gathered that some arrests were made in the cause of the operation which was still on at the time of filing this report.

Spokesman of the state police command, Mr. Okasanmi Ajayi, confirmed the developmen­t to Daily Trust, adding, “We are still mopping up the areas”. He however said he could not give the exact figure of the arrests made in the current operation since it is still ongoing.
