NLC protests non-payment of salaries in states

- By John Chuks Azu

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has said it will pressure state governors who have not paid arrears of salaries of workers to pay before May 29 handover date.

Deputy President of NLC, Comrade Peters Adeyemi stated this yesterday while briefing newsmen on activities to mark this year’s Workers’ Day on May 1.

He said NLC has identified states that have not paid salaries of workers for upward of six months and has constituted taskforces with the state councils to take on the state governors.

“We are not going to allow them to go. We are going to do some trade union shows in the states. We are not going to celebrate their exit. We are going to make sure that when they are going, they will have questions to answer. And the man, who is going to take over from them will know there is a problem,” he said.

On reports that Kogi State government plans to cut workers’ salaries by 40 per cent, he said the union will not accept any slash except the cut begins with the governors and other political office holders.

He informed that the congress is set to push for upward review of the minimum wage for workers in the country.

Asked the implications of the demand on the country’s dwindling oil revenues, he insisted that the blocking of leakages in public revenue would deliver more funds for workers’ welfare.
