The Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator George Akume (APC, Benue), yesterday, held a meeting with the newly elected senators in continuation of his consultation for the seat of the Senate president.

The battle for the Senate presidency got hot as the 8th Assembly’s inauguration date of June 6 draws near.

Consequently, the Benue lawmaker, who is one of the frontline contenders for the number three position, organised the interface with the senators-elect in Abuja, in furtherance of his campaign.

The minority leader, who first came to the Senate in 2007, earlier engaged in one-on-one meeting with the senators, as induction exercise for the new legislators reached its climax.

Akume said: “In 2007, I contested the position against David Mark, when I was in PDP. Now, I am contesting again. I believe that God gives power to whom He likes and I will be ready to work with whoever emerges.”

Apart from Akume, Senator Bukola Saraki, also from North-central, is gunning for the seat.

However, senators from the North-east are also running for the position. They include Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe), Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC, Borno) and Mohammed Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe).

APC national leadership is expected to zone National Assembly positions soon.
