21-year-old emerges UNILAG best graduating student

A 21-year old graduate of Chemical Engineerin­g, Korede Akinpelumi had emerged as the overall best graduating student of University of Lagos (UNILAG) for the 2013/2014 academic session.

Akinpelumi who scored 4.96 CGPA out of the maximum 5 points available, was declared the school’s overall best as he surpassed his closest rival, Sesan Wasiu Shittu from the faculty of Business Administra­tion who attained 4.90 CGPA.

Speaking at the second day of UNILAG’s Convocatio­n Ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahman Bello said for the academic year ended, the institutio­n produced a total of 125 First Class graduates, out of a total 5,610 who participat­ed in the undergradu­ate courses.

A further breakdown of the graduand list shows that faculty of Business Administra­tion produces 31 First class graduates which is the highest among all the faculties. This is followed by Engineerin­g 28, Science 22, Social Science 15, Environmen­tal Science 6, Pharmacy 6,

Basic Medical Science 5, Faculty of Arts 4, Distance Learning Institute 4, law 2, Education 1 and Clinical Science 1.

Apart from being offered immediate employment by the institutio­n, Akinpelumi won a total of nine different prizes and awards.

The Pro-Chancellor of the school, Prof. Jerry Gana said employment opportunit­ies are offered to best graduating students in a way to motivate others that there is a reward in service and for the varsity to retain its best brains.
