… Call for accountability in associations
Students of Bayero University Kano (BUK) have called for accountability and transparency in handling funds belonging to student associations on campus.
The students said the call was necessary because there seems to be a natural tendency to be excessive and the cynical ability to take for granted the feelings of others by those who find themselves in positions of authority.
According to Abubakar Bello of the Political Science Department, student associations are forums where students can air their views so these forums should be seen as vanguards of positive and realistic change.
He noted that history is replete with instances where students have shaken states, fought tyrants to submission adding that it is because of such noble characteristics that such associations must be liberal and have good accountability and transparency systems in place.
Another student, Yusuf Ibrahim, said leaders of student associations must seek to be ready to give good accountability to the members and also be transparent in their dealings.
He said the fact that they are going to be presented before the Almighty to give account of their deeds on the day of judgment is enough to make them do their duty with diligence.
“Accountability and transparency must always be within union and association administration as a matter of necessity,” he stressed.
He however urged those responsible to emulate past leaders especially those who have their names written in gold because of their accountability and truthfulness.
“This will make them leave a worthy legacy after their tenure,” he said.
