Niger Assembly elects new speaker Mijinyawa emerges Adamawa speaker
The Niger State House of Assembly, yesterday, elected the member representing Chanchaga constituency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Marafa as the speaker of its 8th assembly, unopposed.
The new speaker was nominated by Bashir Lokogoma (APC), a member representing Wushishi constituency and Bako Alfa of the APC from Bida North constituency.
The House also elected Hussaini Ibrahim (APC) of Agaie constituency, unopposed, as the deputy speaker after being nominated by Binta Mamman of the APC from Gurara constituency and Nura Garba of the APC from Kontagora.
In his inaugural speech, Marafa assured the people of the state of purposeful legislation with a view to improving the lives of the people.
In the same vein, Isah Ibrahim of the APC from Rijau constituency emerged as majority leader, Musa Sule of Katcha constituency elected as Chief Whip while Bello Ahmad of the People Democratic Party (PDP) from Agwara constituency emerged the minority leader. The lawmaker representing Yola South Constituency, Kabiru Mijinyawa (APC), has been elected as speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly.
The new speaker scored 17 out of the 25 votes cast to thrash his opponent, Rufa’i Umar from Gombi constituency who scored 8 votes. Sunday Peter representing Guyuk constituency has also emerged unopposed as the deputy speaker of the House.
In his address, the new speaker pledged to resolve issues between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state to enable the government tackle the challenges facing the state.
The state governor, Mohammed Jibrilla who witnessed the inauguration congratulated the new speaker, expressing optimism that he would use his experience to promote the best relationship between the two arms of government.
He called on politicians to place the interest of the people above any other interest and channel their energy towards the development of the state.
