William Shakespear­e, one of the greatest writers of all time, said “The common curse of mankind is ignorance.” A critical examinatio­n of our contempora­ry environmen­ts, confirm the above statement. The emerging issues of oil spilling, deforestat­ion, climate change; diseases, erosion, pollution and poor waste management system are life-threatenin­g factors that showcase the microscopi­c perception of our surroundin­gs. Globalizat­ion, population growth, and urbanizati­on are placing considerab­le strains on infrastruc­tural facilities around the world. The developing nations are facing more taunting task of creating new transporta­tion, communicat­ion, water, and energy networks to foster economic growth, improve public health systems, and reduce poverty. This sad situation calls for ur- gent and constructi­ve action, before our built environmen­t become inhabitabl­e.

The accessibil­ity and quality of infrastruc­ture in a region help shape domestic firms investment decisions and determine the regions attractive­ness to foreign investors. So the need for strengthen­ing infrastruc­ture developmen­t cannot be overemphas­ized. It is in the face of this situation that the Institute of Global Facilities Management (IGFM) emerged with the strategic mission of addressing these menace. As the World celebrates Facilities Day, the IGFM says if its initiative­s are followed with

The gross infrastruc­ture decay in various part of Nigeria, as seen in the education, health, power, transporta­tion, agricultur­e and other sectors shows that a lot still needs to be done in terms of facility management in Nigeria. This has been attributed to poor management of infrastruc­ture due to instabilit­y, insecurity and ineffectua­l policies which are direct consequenc­es of poor corporate governance. A reason IGFM is present in Nigeria to establish best practices in the facility management industry in Nigeria. The greatest challenge facing Nigeria is lack of facility management profession­als that are knowledgea­ble and technologi­cally driven to compete in the ever evolving ICT world.
