William Shakespeare, one of the greatest writers of all time, said “The common curse of mankind is ignorance.” A critical examination of our contemporary environments, confirm the above statement. The emerging issues of oil spilling, deforestation, climate change; diseases, erosion, pollution and poor waste management system are life-threatening factors that showcase the microscopic perception of our surroundings. Globalization, population growth, and urbanization are placing considerable strains on infrastructural facilities around the world. The developing nations are facing more taunting task of creating new transportation, communication, water, and energy networks to foster economic growth, improve public health systems, and reduce poverty. This sad situation calls for ur- gent and constructive action, before our built environment become inhabitable.
The accessibility and quality of infrastructure in a region help shape domestic firms investment decisions and determine the regions attractiveness to foreign investors. So the need for strengthening infrastructure development cannot be overemphasized. It is in the face of this situation that the Institute of Global Facilities Management (IGFM) emerged with the strategic mission of addressing these menace. The gross infrastructure decay in various part of Nigeria, as seen in the education, health, power, transportation, agriculture and other sectors shows that a lot still needs to be done in terms of facility management in Nigeria. This has been attributed to poor management of infrastructure due to instability, insecurity and ineffectual policies which are direct consequences of poor corporate governance. A reason IGFM is present in Nigeria to establish best practices in the facility management industry in Nigeria. The greatest challenge facing Nigeria is lack of facility management professionals that are knowledgeable and technologically driven to compete in the ever evolving ICT world.
