PDP BoT chair says National Assembly election promotes democracy

- By Muideen Olaniyi

Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed, has described the new bi-partisan leadership of the 8th National Assembly as the best for the current direction in Nigeria’s march towards democratic growth and development.

He stated this yesterday in Abuja during an audience with PDP’s chieftains and stalwarts from across the country who called on him to discuss Tuesday’s election of the new Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and that of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

He said that the emergence of the new Senate President from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a free, fair and transparent contest represents the collective readiness and resolve of the nation’s political class across party divide to launch the nation on the path of people - oriented democracy.

He noted with delight that the election of the new leaders of the 8th National Assembly was a great display by the law makers that national interest and collective good of the generality of Nigerians should override narrow, personal and parochial interest and that Nigeria’s unity, peace, stability and development will continue to be on the legislative front burner.

“The elections of the new leaders of the 8th National Assembly has raised the bar of the democracy which our party, the PDP, has successfully nurtured in the last 16 years. A unique feature of the elections in the Senate and the House of Representatives is the element of bi-partisanship. It is an opportunity for all shades of political opinions to work together to move the nation forward. We are all stakeholders in Project Nigeria”, he said.

In a release signed by his Special Assistant, Media, Mr Emeka Nwakpa, he congratulated and praised the law makers in both Chambers for the exemplary manner in which they elected their leaders according to their rules, noting that they were peaceful, orderly and democratic thereby exhibiting the highest respect for the legislature as an arm of government, anchored on the principle of separation of powers.
