Media owners must pay salaries regularly – Editors

-

Media owners must ensure regular payment of salaries as well as provide improved working conditions commensurate to the efforts of media practitioners, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has said.

The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the 11th Annual All Nigerian Editors Conference (ANEC) which held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State from August 26 to 30, 2015.

The editors also commended the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for the steps so far taken to tackle terrorism and corruption, adding that the two should neither be selective not politicized.

The editors resolved that the “media will remain steadfast in objective reportage of events in the country as well as facilitators and agents of the positive change that Nigerians desire.

“That Nigerians must unite to build a nation that is prosperous and secure, irrespective of political, ethnic and religious differences.

“That the government at all levels must carry the mass media along in planning and execution of critical developmental policies and programmes.

Daily Trust reports that at the conference, Garba Deen Muhammad was unanimously elected as the new president of the Nigerian Guild of Editors.

He replaced former president Femi Adesina who is now the Senior Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Steve Ayorinde is now the new Deputy President, while Mrs Funke Egbemode has been elected as Vice-President (West).

Muhammad had since expressed his readiness to work in the best interest of the group, adding that members will not regret electing him.
