Lawmaker wants Arochukwu/Ohafia road completed
Representative of Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in the National Assembly Nko Nkole has called on the federal government to extend its corruption fight into the contracts awarded for the construction of Arochukwu/ Ohafia federal road.
Nkole said this while conducting journalists round the road at the weekend.
The lawmaker pointed out that the contract for construction of Arochukwu/Ohafia road has been awarded three times by successive governments without much work on the road.
His words, “Arochukwu/Ohafia road has suffered neglect since the end of the civil war 41 years ago. The road stretches about 40 kilometres across five communities.
‘’In normal circumstances, the journey from Ohafia to Arochukwu should take not more than 30 minutes. Now, it takes a minimum of two hours.”
“As a result of the terrible condition of the road, transporters charge as much as N600 from Ohafia to Arochukwu, which should cost N100. Commercial farmers in the area no longer produce enough to sell in the cities as commercial vehicles hardly ply the area. They have now resorted to subsistence farming to sustain their families,” the lawmaker lamented.
He recalled that the plight of the communities and commuters was almost abated by the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) which awarded the contract for the rehabilitation of the road from Umuahia to Arochukwu when the current President Muhammdu Buhari was the chairman of PTF.
Before the repairs could go far, the military left power and the PTF was scrapped.
Also speaking, the President General Nzuko Arochukwu, Mazi Nnamdi Udoh said what is required now is to redeem the people from bondage.
