Can Immigration boss Abeshi cope?

- Ogubuyi K., Ikeja - Lagos

With the appointment of Mr. Kure Martin Abeshi as Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, many Nigerians are eagerly waiting to see if the man has any broom and whether he will have the courage to sweep corruption out of the service. As things stand today, most immigration officers don’t depend on their official salaries. As we showed last week, there is a wide network of sleaze so comprehensively embedded in the NIS system that it has come to be accepted as the norm.

If Abeshi does not intend to ruffle the feathers of his corrupt colleagues, then he has no business mounting the saddle. The public will be on his case round the clock. If he slips up, this writer will dutifully hang him out to dry. While we give him the benefit of the doubt, we must assist him with suggestions.

Last week’s piece titled “Buhari’s broom at Immigration” elicited quite a number of reactions some of which I publish here today to assist Mr Abeshi fight the cancer of corruption destroying the Nigerian Immigration Service. Time will tell if Mr Abeshi is the sweeper we have been waiting for - or whether we should cry out to PMB to give us another. at the Immigration Service without further delay. from outbound passengers interested in using the Fast Track line. They had caused an ‘artificial’ gridlock on the regular queue. It got me thinking, if 1,000 passengers pay the illegal toll of N1,000 daily, these criminals in uniform are on their way to becoming millionaires in a couple of days!
